> SR turn both hands; resist, 1.5 inside turn. man 1/2 R turn, L high, lady to R, then lady FW and L wrap.
XB and slide to R-L-L-R. SR turn both hands. Resist, step around to L, bringing hands high and give lady 1.5 turn, finishing hands high facing lady.
5-6-7 Half R turn to R side of lady, L hand pushing up like a waiter with a plate to give space. End stood to side of lady, L high, R low. 1 direction fw, 2-3 R turn, LH high and RH to waist, wrapping around lady's front.
> unwrap, throw LH down to R-L-L-R.
5-6-7 prep and 1-2-3 unwind. 5 throw LH down, 6-7 starting XB (but man will turn).
> XB with man's turn, back to closed.
1 direction forwards, LH going up like waiter. 2 LH up to shoulder, RH releasing at waist. Tip: make sure lady's direction is still forwards. Then man turns, releasing L, and retakes it the other side; then on 5 reach back out for rib-cage with R. (Retaking with the L hand sounds awkward, but actually it feels pretty smooth when it works.)
> XB and slide, SR both hands, release L going round. Resist, take L again and 1.5 travelling L turn back into closed. Straight into walking around in a circle.
Releasing the L (a bit like a slip) after starting the turn with both hands feels a bit odd -- why not just do the turn with one hand?
Then a resist, offer L hand again palm out, and give the lady a 1.5 L turn with LH high. (NB I think I was doing the turn the other way in class, watch out.) Slip RH, then take closed hold and go into walking around for 3 bars. XB.
<<<
2 o'clock 3/4 turn, arms across shoulders and circle, into XB with inside turn L-L R-R, 2 o'clock turn, turn lady from R-R and swap hands by traiiling across her shoulders.
<<<
started off apart, did some stuff. You know the score.
XB and slide to R-L. Start like another XB, but lead like inside turn, and wrap around so lady faces away from man, man's hand on lady's shoulder. 5-6-7 prep, direction back on 7, then lead turn-and-a-half to return to the original position, R-L.
From R-L, man raises L arm (remember, hold is with R) and does 2-o'clock turn, trapping lady's L, and bringing her around to the other side on 1-2-3. Then let go, and man finishes turn free, taking lady's L again with his R.
Back R-L again. The lesson didn't really go any further.
> from L-R, SR turn, with man's 0.25 L turn, release hand behind neck. Catch with R, resist, 1.5 travelling L turn
XB to open, 1-2-3 SR turn L-R. Man does side turn style, but only 1/4 turn, ending up facing away to L, with back in line with lady's R hand. Drape L hand with lady's R over back of L shoulder.
at some point -- maybe on/after 3? -- release L hand, and catch with RH low by hip. 5-6-7 resist -- still standing sideways -- and start lady moving forwards. Around 7 to 1, half R turn faces you back towards the lady. Direction on 1 and already hand moving away into turn, lady does 1.5 L turn.
> 2 o'clock turn R high. Take L under, half crucifix with LH on hip. Turn out with travelling R turn.
Finish turn with RH high. Man does 2 o'clock 3/4 turn, then offers LH under R. Lead fw with R, and into half crucifix, the low LH resting on the lady's hip. 5-6-7 step forward and prep, then lead back into travelling R 1.5 turn.
(Incidentally, this makes a nice change as a way to get out of half crucifix -- just think XB with travelling R turn)
> then we did three hair combs, to general amusement
step on the spot for 4 bars (start on 5? Maybe 1, don't recall).
step around in a circle for 5 bars. 5-6-7 is still mostly walking round, but then turns into
1-2-3 XB
<<<
out of XB, pull R with L-R, then pull L, and turn back-to-back.
<<<
the first bit is nice -- out of XB, move R leading with L hand (5-6-7. change direcction and come back on 6), and then take R-L and move L leading with R hand. 1 moving L, 2 and 3 turn back-to-back. Need to be close for this to work!
... ?
> XB to open, SR turn lady L-R, man side turn
> hold lady's R arm with L hand under man's R arm, man turns 1.5 CCW while lady does XB-like
from L-R, start like XB feet on 1-2-3, bringing L hand to solar plexus area. Grip with R arm (around elbow level, not in the armpit!!!). Hold on 1 and 2. Then release on 3, and man finishes the turn to take lady's R with his R.
> take R-R, resist, travelling CW (inside) turn
Stepping round to the L, lead forward with RH on 1, 2-3 change direction and lead the inside turn. End facing each other.
> hair comb lady and show L, XB with travelling CCW turn
5-6-7 hair comb with R and show L. 1 lead forward with L, then 2-3 change direction for CCW travelling turn.
after that, continue turn by another 1/2, taking ribcage with R hand on 5, and bring lady's L hand over man's head and onto shoulders with L hand.
> swing
We have man's R arm on lady's ribcage, and lady's L arm around man's shoulders.
On 6, step f/w with L foot in front of lady. On 7, step with R foot behind the lady's L foot [to make sure we end in the right place], exaggerated weight transfer, and make a 1/2 turn ish CCW on the R foot (lady turning on her L). (An exercise: after this turn, man stops with L knee high, lady with R knee high.)
On 1, catch the backwards movement and give direction into XB. (I think this changeover is where the dynamicism of the swing comes in, which I didn't quite get.)
> XB to open R-L-L-R, SR turn both high. Lift R hand over man's head, turn 1/2 turn and release LH.
To turn while holding, step backwards. It's quite a bit like the previous one. The trick is to figure out which is the left hand!
> resist R-L, travelling turn CW (?), back to closed
close by placing lady's L hand on man's R shoulder, then taking ribcage
> start apart. Random footwork, then XB and offer LH
> L-R SR turn, show RH high and XB with travelling CW turn.
> R-L resist, show LH high, step around to L-shoulder-R-hip.
5-6-7 resist R and show LH high, lady takes it with her R. step around behind lady, bringing LH to her L shoulder and RH to her R hip.
> Resist, then step around to L and across with CCW turn to XB.
2 change her direction (this is a resist again), and 5-6-7 step across in front, releasing RH and holding LH high, and turning CCW so her arm goes over your head. Change hands on 7, standing sideways and about to give direction to R, as if you'd just done 5-6-7 lead-in to XB.
> "bounce" RH, CW 1.5 turn, coming back to face lady.
> start apart. XB back to apart again. Random footwork, XB offering LH.
> double R turn, with man's side turn
5-6-7 backstep, L-R and leading lady's hand R on 5, L on 6, R on 7. Double turn (not spin), so lead first turn on 1-2, second on 3-and. Man does side turn, so turning at the same time as lady's second turn.
> XB with man's turn, hand to chest to move lady across
We did this 2007 07 23
> take R-R, resist, CW travelling turn
take R-R coming out of the XBish. 5-6-7 resist and man turns 1/4 to R like the start of XB, 1 direction man stepping sideways (ie like XB) and direction R with RH high, 2-3 reverse direction and do CW turn.
> drape R, offer L.
> L-L XB with CCW turn,
5-6-7 drape RH over lady's shoulder (no tension, remember), and offer LH. 1 direction f/w with LH; 2-3 reverse direction and CCW travelling 1.5 turn.
> then RH on ribcage and into swing
Continue the turn a little, putting RH on ribcage and LH over shoulder -- nice strong frame.
Swing. Footwork (for man):
* 5 R foot under body
* 6 L foot in front of lady
* 7 R foot behind lady's L
Then on 7, a half turn bringing lady round. 1 is then a strong forward lead, going into XB.
> XB slide to R-L-L-R, step behind, L-shoulder-R-hip, step in front, bounce RH to XB with CW turn
As the second half of 2007 08 01 improvers
Lots of good stuff in here, a lot of which would stand alone. Of particular note the reverse XB, which could become a walk-around-in-a-circle if you wanted; the swirl, which is hard to get but could be nice to do; the turn back on 7 from the facing away; the XB with man's turn with the LH high. The rest was pretty good too though.
> ReverseXB
on 1-2-3, step behind and to the L, it's pretty much like XB really. Feels odd, but fairly easy to do and unusual.
> XB and slide
> XB with one CCW turn, end RH on R shoulder, LH on R hip
Direction given with RH, then LH leads the turn. RH nearly pushes, ending on lady's shoulder.
Man has LH across behind lady to her R hip (slightly unusually? Doesn't feel weird at the time)
> turn back, XB R-L-L-R
5-6 prep as normal. 7 swoosh lady back round 1/2 turn (a bit like the flushing motion). XB starts with direction on 1 etc as normal.
> resist, "swirl" lady and back to another resist
resist on 6, and step to the L to let the lady pass.
In the "swirl", the lady is led past the man L to R, "swooshed" round on 2, and led back on 3. The man has already stepped out of her way, he leads
* forward (to his R) with his LH on 1
* around back towards the L with his RH on 2, giving the lady a half CW turn
* forward, now to his L, on 3 with his LH
on 5, back to using "both" hands, the lady turns back again, for another normal R-L-L-R resist on 6
> RH high, XB with CW travelling turn
> swap hands so L-R LH high, XB with man's CW turn
LH held high and keep hold of the woman's hand -- note to self, this is at least as good as slipping and retaking.
> L-R, resist and around the world
quite nice and natural to do
> come out on 1 to XB, offer LH to L-R
Vicky points out: be careful that the lady moves forward on 1, not back.
> resist L-R, push with R to separate, both spin
Push lady's R arm with R arm, to give her a spin, letting go with L (and not taking with R). Man does half CW turn (following the direction of the move) to return to face the lady, then comes out of that and "bounces" out of the foot to spin in the other direction. Like we do before class.
The lesson ended like this, dancing apart.
This was quite a fun one, if a bit involved in places. The block-in-closed after the L-R resist is quite nice for the man (not sure how the ladies will like it).
> started apart
a few OK things to do, including
* Cross over with L foot on forward step (lady copies on her f/w step)
* bachanga
> XB and slide
> 1/4 side turn, RH high, release and retake LH
prep like SR turn R-L-L-R, but then rather than the lady turning, the man does 1/4 side turn, so the lady is behind him and on his R. RH high like waiter. LH goes behind head, then release on 3, and catch again on 5 with man's LH behind his back.
> resist (LH), 1/2 turn to side-to-side, lady CW turn and retake R-L-L-R
> XB with man's turn, LH high, releasing RH
> resist L-R, then block and lady steps in place
The man just gets in the way of the lady, so she can't go forward; takes her in a solid closed hold; and stands there. He doesn't lead at all, that's how the lady can tell what to do. (Although I noticed Mark was dropping his whole weight downwards on 1, 3, 5, 7, etc, and that seemed to help.)
To escape after about 3 bars, start XB on 1. If possible, a kick with the L foot on 8 is fun.
> XB to L-R. Double CW turn, prep with LH but offer R and lead with RH
Started roughly like 2007 08 15 - Level 2, but from closed hold
> closed hold, XB and slide
> 1/4 side turn, RH high, LH over head release and retake
As 2007 08 15 - Level 2, up to 5-6 resist. Not sure what happened on 7, probably turned around CW a bit.
>
"bounce" RH behind lady's head on 1, then turn CCW for man, CW for lady on 2.
3 lead double CW spin.
5-6-7 lead another stepped single CW turn.
> XB-like lead R-L, man steps around in front
> R-L-R with RH over head behind, turn lady and man turns to face
> resist R-L, step around behind, resist and pull back, RH to ribcage
> XB with inside turn
> ... really should stop here, but the next would be nice if it worked ...
> R-L-L-R, inside turn both hands high, slip L then interrupt on 3 and reverse direction to turn back out
> stop backwards movement on 1 with XB RH-on-ribcage
The first move is a nice little bit -- short, but unusual, and actually quite easy for the lady I think.
> Open R-L-L-R
> Start like XB but then turn lady back CW, man CCW turn, both hands high.
R-L-L-R open hold. 5-6-7 start like XB with CW turn, leading with L hand
1 direction forward with L hand as normal; RH goes towards lady's R shoulder, but no tension
2 just as if it was a CW turn in the XB, L hand leads over lady's R shoulder (ie the outside shoulder), RH going in the same direction
3 still leading with LH, bring the lady's arms around in front -- literally around, it's quite a sweeping motion, that is what arrests the movement -- in front, back to the original forward direction. At the same time, the man does a CCW turn, his hands high, and coming back to the original position.
Men's footwork is like the XB with a turn: 5-6-7 as normal; 1 direction to L, 2 transfer weight back to R, 3 transfer back to left and turn CCW. But the turn at the end is only a 3/4 turn rather than the full 1 1/4 which would otherwise be there.
This is a little like the first move in 2007 08 15 - Level 3. Maybe.
> XB with CW turn, RH high, slip L
> prep then lead L turn
R-L-L-R. 5-6-7 arms L, then R, little tension.
1 move both arms to the L
2 resist on the L, then both arms R to lead a L turn, RH high and LH ending with the lady's R wrapped around her back on 3.
> turn out with CW travelling turn
> 6 resist, block palm-to-palm open
man does open-close steps 1-2-3 5-6-7
> walk around palm-to-palm
start on 7? Walk around 1-2-3
> 6 resist, 1-2-3 circle wrists then fling up and catch
too fast to do successfully? Not sure it's worth it anyway.
> XB and slide R-L-L-R
> SR turn, both hands high. Slip LH to return R-L-L-R.
> resist, step to L. Man 1.5 CCW turn, lady 1/2 CW turn then step on spot
5-6-7 Resist R-L-L-R, man steps to L and gives lady a 1/2 CW[?] turn, both hands high, while doing a 1/2 turn CCW himself.
1-2-3 5-6-7 man does a further CCW turn in place, hands above his head.

> standing to L, direction forwards, CCW turn for lady
On 1, standing to L of lady, bring hands down to RH side and give her direction forwards.
2-3 lady CCW turn, RH? high. 5-6-7 man turns 1/2 CCW, releasing LH behind back? Not sure about this section.
> from R-L standing side-to-side, lead fw, push back on R hip, raise RH
Hold R-L, man to L of lady. 1 lead fw, 2-3
oh dear I'm confused
Levels 2 and 3 together, they were pretty similar.
> XB and slide
> from L-R SR turn with man's side turn LH high, swapping hands as you exit the side turn
This was quite nice, actually -- the RH comes round anyway during the side turn, and will carry on to your L into the next move, so taking the lady's RH with it as it comes past is natural.
(Level 3 we did a double R turn)
> half crucifix, turn out single or double
Level 2 used a single turn (well, one and a half). Level 3 we used a double turn, so the lady should already have done a half turn and be facing the man on 1.
> that taking by the wrists and XB-like backwards and forwards bit
Level 3 followed up with ...
> swing
> XB including RH held up behind, man turns 1/2 to the R and then back
The two XBs with opposing turns are a nice pair.
> XB to open
> footwork: open-close with taps
> ReverseXB
5-6-7 forwards; 1 step back with L, 2 back and behind (ie L) with R, 3 we've turned, come out into the other direction.
> from R-L-L-R resist, step around behind, and re-take R-L-L-R
Two XBs with man's turns, first one way and then the other
> from R-L-L-R XB with man's CCW turn, RH high
Here we carry on in the direction we're naturally turning anyway. RH high, slip the LH
> again from R-L-L-R, XB with man's CW turn, LH high
This is the classical "XB and turn" footwork from the warmups, where we turn out, then reverse direction for the turn. Don't forget that the woman has to turn on 3, give pressure towards her to turn her CW on 3.
> XB with lady's CW turn
offer RH high, lead with that
> 2 o'clock turn, R-L, RH high
> take lady's L wrist with L hand and give her SR turn
A bit odd, but it does work. It's like pulling across in front, to turn her around.
> catch and return to closed hold
This was based on the Juan Matos move from the congress. I can't remember all of Lisa & Mark's interpretation. :-(
Start with crucifix, but stop the lady with the back of the R wrist under her upper arm. Turn back travelling.
... what happens next?
Just a note ... there was more than this. This is the sequence taken from Juan Matos' congress move.
man's 2 o'clock CW turn, swapping hands behind. When coming out of the turn R-R, pull the lady into a R-cuddle; take L-L, and rather than coming back, carry on turning the lady CW to turn out.
One other movelet that just sprang into my head which might follow this: coming out of a move R-R-L-L with the hands crossed, can always slip the top hand past the bottom to reverse the sense of the hold.
This one's a bit involved, but it's quite nice, and it decays nicely too - the failure modes are nice moves in themselves. The two parts should split up too.
XB and slide to R-L-L-R.
First (partial) move: XB with man's CW turn, RH high, LH goes to man's shoulder and slips to retake R-L-L-R.
> lead on 1 with LH low and forwards, then as the man turns, LH goes over shoulder to slip off lady's hand on the man's back.
The "real" move starts the same: from R-L-L-R, XB with man's CW turn, RH high, LH goes to shoulder, but then CCW turn for the lady.
> 1 - lead fw
> 2 - man turns CW, RH high, LH going to shoulder. Keep the LH through 2, to start the lady turning CCW.
> 3 - the man is half turned or something now. Now the RH (which is high) leads the rest of the lady's turn, pushing back over the man's head and then following.
5-6-7 R-L man's 2 o'clock turn, then copa (?) on 1 - RH leads down and forwards, anyway, man in XB position.
... this next bit would stand on its own, and very nicely too ...
From R-L XB position, offer LH, and turn lady in on 2-3 into R-cuddle. Walk around CCW (ie, man backwards, same direction as the lady is already turning); can make a full circle on 5-6-7. On 1 turn out CW, 1.5 turns with both hands high to end up R-L-L-R crossed.
Man does 10 o'clock turn (?), ending with the lady at his LH shoulder; his LH at his R shoulder, and RH forward holding lady's L. Copa again, I think. Then we slipped the LH and turned out I think.
From R-L, man does SR turn, swapping hands behind his back. On returning to face the lady, man uses his RH to throw throw her LH to the man's left, so she does a single free turn.
Finish by picking her up, hair comb, etc.
These are the moves which I made most use of at the Clave Club last night.
* L-R lady SR turn and man's 1/4 side turn, drop the hand and catch in R
** was following it with a R-R resist and CCW travelling turn, mostly. It would be nice to have some other ideas from the R-R resist.
* half crucifix, full crucifix
* the one like a full crucifix but with the LH under the R, so we end up with the LH on the lady's R hip
* the one like a full crucifix but bring the hands further round, in front of the face, before turning out again
* XB to pull R, pull L and both turn
* R-L-L-R resist, step to L of lady, drape with L high and RH to hip, resist again standing behind lady
** usually followed this by turning out again
** also did the slip RH and walk around in front
* R-L-L-R SR turn, both high
** resist, travelling turn
** copa, CCW turn (level 3 move). The sequence then caught at the hip and pushed back on 5.
* from R-L-L-R, or others (?), hair comb man into XB
** sometimes XB with inside turn
The following came up a few times, but I should make more of them:
* from R-R, resist, step behind lady and resist forward with LH on her L shoulder
Things to look up
* what's that cheeky one where the man stops a bit in the lady's way?
The first part is a sequence of turns, left and right, in which we did styling. It would probably work with the right feel, but I wasn't in the zone this time, at least. The second part uses holds on the hips etc, that we've not done for a while; Vicky was not impressed, but I thought it made a nice change. The last move was quite a nice reminder with an unusual and doable finish.
--
XB, inside turn to half-crucifix-like holding R wrist. Like we've done before.
Turn out on the spot CW. swap hands to L-R, prep a CCW turn, then lead by leading forward and (man's) R on 1, back on 2. Coming out of turn, continue it round to like another half crucifix, but only in the diagonal not all the way around. Back out to another CW turn.
Man's 2 o'clock turn, swap hands and XB.
--
L-R resist, then let go and put hands on lady's hips. She puts her hands on man's shoulders. Man stands still, lady cross-steps 1-2-3.
5-6-7 resist, and man steps around to L of lady, resist again from beind on 2 with hands on hips.
--
5-6-7 step back round in front, offer hand (any will do!), and resist again. Step round to L again, resist on 2 with hands on shoulders to pull back.
Leave RH on shoulder, release LH and take lady's R arm. Lead forward on 1 with L, then travelling turn CCW for lady; man's LH doesn't rise, but turns to face palm *up*, and lands on her shoulder, so lady's L arm is across her body.
Travelling outside (CW) turn to get out again.
After a reminder of a XB variant, the HalfCrucifix variant and following move lead from the shoulder is nice, because it's fairly simple to do, and easy to style.
--
SR turn L-R. XB with man's CW turn, LH to neck, slip and retake R-R.
XB, going into lady facing away like HalfCrucifix , but holding lady's R wrist with L hand. 5-6-7 prep and start free CW turn with LH, letting go; offer L palm again, and after 1/3 of a turn or so, palm-to-palm L-L resist on 2 to reverse the direction of the turn, to do a full CCW turn.
As the lady comes out of the turn, man takes her L shoulder with his L hand, and leads a travelling CW turn, with man's XB-CW-turn.
> The lead for the turn was tricky. Theoretically, on 7, straighten the arm to open out lady; on 1, lead forward (starting her turning CW?), and on 2, lead the turn proper and let go. Then the man's CW turn.
--
Coming out of the CW turn that went with the XB, offer RH, palm down and trailing the elbow. Then prep hand to the L as we back-step on 6, and go into the HalfCrucifix, turn out CW, turn CCW sequence from 2007 11 12.
The second part, coming out of the 2 o'clock turn R-L and wrapping the lady with her L arm, then XB out, is nice -- safe once the timing's right, and interestingly different.
--
XB to open L-R.
Prep SR turn with LH low, but hold RH high palm forward; on 1, take R-L and drop LH to lead the turn with RH.
2 o'clock turn, RH high.

Coming out of 2 o'clock turn R-L, lead down and towards to lady's forward right diagonal to start her turning CW. As she nears the end of the turn, swap hands, ending up with L-L, with her left arm round her back, and held at the hip.
5-6-7 start XB, still with LH at lady's R hip. On 1, now standing sideways, prep forward with the LH. On 2, RH on her L shoulder, and prep f/w with that side. "There should now be quite a bit of tension in the L arm" (although it's not uncomfortable). 3, lead out into travelling inside turn.
--
Coming out of the inside turn, we did a little like last week -- HalfCrucifix-like but held L-R, turn out half a turn and lead forward on 1, then travelling inside (CCW) turn to separate.
Unspectacular, but rather nice, and a bit higher-level (ie more interesting ;-) than some. The wrap in the second part, from a L-R resist, is nicely unusual. And at the end, we have good revision, and another swing, which is always good practice.
--
From closed, XB to open, SR turn changing arms R-R.
Resist, CW travelling turn.
From R-R, L arm comes in and kind of twirls around to take the lady's R.
From L-R XB.

From L-R resist, offering RH high.
Take RH, but lead with LH low, turning lady around so her RH goes behind her back, still held with the man's L. This might be a little like the "flush" low-lead turn, but it doesn't seem quite the same. The man's RH stays high, coming down to his R with the lady's L arm; the arm is out diagonal, and the lady is facing diagonally, so it's kind of straight out to her side. 6-7 prep down and up, just like a crucifix.
Turn out.
--
Re-take R-L-L-R. Do the XB with man's turn that we did a few weeks ago (XXX find the notes and link) -- direction f/w on 1, then man turns CW, LH to shoulder and RH high to turn lady, losing LH.
From R-L, 2 o'clock half turn, ending man facing away from lady, lady to his R and facing the same way. Lead a travelling CCW turn, letting go of the hand, and catching lady again on the ribcage.
Swing: weight to R foot; weight back to L, and pivot. I dunno, it just seemed to work this week. :-)
The lesson move was a lot like 2007 12 10 at the beginning, but with a nice twist.
In general, the 2 o'clock turn is another way to start a sequence from open hold, for some reason I keep forgetting it.
From R-L, 2 o'clock half turn, RH high over the R shoulder. Lead lady forwards and CCW turn, dropping hand to the hip. Now the lady's in front of the man; step to the R, and pull back at the hip.
Now man is standing in front of the lady, his back to her. Raise RH above head, and lead R-L-R over your head backwards, then give the lady a CW turn.
The second part of this is a nice fun bit (if it works)
> XB open, SR turn R-R. L hand to twirl, then R retakes to give another SR turn, ending R-R elbow-to-elbow.
After the SR turn, L arm comes in from on top, and gives a clockwise swirl to the lady's R arm, before man re-takes it with his R, and pushes forward/down to give another SR turn R-R, ending with the man's R elbow to the L of the lady's R elbow. Like the second part of 2007 June 25 - Improvers.
> resist, travelling R 1.5 turn.
Again like 2007 June 25 - Improvers.
> from R-R resist and 1/2 L turn, holding lady's R hand at man's R hip. Once stay and then go back;
5-*6* resist R-R, then -7 man 1/2 R turn, taking lady's R hand to man's R hip.
1-2-3 man just stays still -- don't even step. Lady comes so her arm is around the man's back, but can't step forward, so just does some styling and reverses direction.
> resist again, R to R hip again. Offer L, wide sweep to R, then turn and hair comb and XB
Unwind, then do the same resist again (nice cheeky bit you see ;-), this time offer the L hand as the lady arrives. On 1-2-3 haul lady round to R, 5-6 L turn. In all this the lady has travelled past the man, like if it was a travelling turn, but it's different.
Now hair comb with L hand, take ribcage with R and going into XB, give direction on 1. (Difficult to hit, but important if the lady isn't expecting it)
> XB to open, swap hand, repeat dummy and real resists. Offer L, in-place 1.5 R turn back to closed.
Same as the previous two resists. After the second, 1 offer the L hand, 2 lead down and to the L, coming up and making it an in-place turn, taking the lady at the end.
All good stuff. Particularly the latter two moves, both from R-R resists, are simple and effective, but the first is good too.
> XB slide to R-L-L-R, SR turn to HammerLock
> 1.5 travelling turn, lead with low R hand, releasing L high
R hand is on lady's hip, with her arm behind her back. 5-6-7 prep with R hand. 1 pull downwards/diagonal ("flush") with R hand to start her in a travelling turn. 2 transferring weight to R foot, which is to R diagonal, pull lady forwards with R hand, releasing L. Then release R too. (The pull forwards stops her continuing to turn after completing this turn.) 3 transfer weight back to L foot, coming to face lady.
> Take R-R, resist, step behind and take L shoulder, reversing her direction and bringing her into R-cuddle.
5 step across to the left, offering R hand to lady's R (make sure you step far enough so she doesn't take it with her left by mistake). 6 resist, 7 step further L and half R turn as the lady passes straight along the wall. Take her L shoulder with your L hand, and on 2 stop her and change her direction. Stay to her L, so lady comes back into man's R arm.
> prep with R, turn out back to R-R.
> Resist R-R, pass low with R hand, turning lady to R, man takes half R turn
Resist R-R, then on 1 drop the R hand plenty below waist level, and step past to L of lady. This has the effect of starting the lady turning R. On 2, push RH out to R, now behind the lady, continuing the turn. On 3, man does a half turn to the L, raising the hand so it passes over his head, finishing the turn and ending up both facing.
> Swap hands, XB to close.
> from L-R, SR turn, with man's 0.25 L turn, release hand behind neck. Catch with R, resist, 1.5 travelling L turn
As 18 June 2007 - Improvers, but at the end of the lady's turn on 3, man turned further and is facing away, with his RH to his waist.
> man L turn into XB, twizzling lady's R with LH; take w/ R, push away down and turn up and round.
step out to R, then turning L towards normal XB position on the other side of the lady. Releasing RH on 5, taking again with LH on 6, sweeping lady's R wrist down with L, and on 7, sweeping it back up again. Swap hands, taking lady's R with R.
On 1, push down and away with a swooping motion, along with a definite step fw with the L foot. Swoop carries on to lead a SR turn for the lady.
Coming out of the turn, catch lady's R elbow to R side of man's. Feels a bit odd/twisted; hard to describe. A bit like an arm lock. Both forearms vertically up, man's R palm up and out.
> R-R, but man's R elbow outside lady's elbow. Resist, travelling R turn out.
Resist, then a travelling 1.5 R turn to unwind.
> hair comb R, take ribs w/ left and walk in a circle, swapping to hold with R. Out into XB.
At the end of the travelling turn, R arm carries on into a hair comb, while L arm takes the lady's ribcage, switching direction into a walking-in-a-circle to L. During the first bar (5-6-7), swap the arms so that the lead is with the R arm as usual. As always, 3 bars, then out into XB on 1.
swapping arms to hold w/ R on ribs as normal during 5-6-7. 1-2-3 5-6-7. *1* out into XB.
The moves in the second part, going from the two-handed holds, are short, but cool.
XB to open, SR turn changing hands, 2 o'clock turn and half crucifix. Turn out to R-R, and offer L hand over.
--
From R-R L-L, LH on top, lift LH further and XB with man's CCW turn, slipping RH at the shoulder. Retake R-L-L-R.
--
From R-L-L-R, lift RH and bring LH to the waist, then walk around in a circle, pulling lady around after you.
Lead out on 1 with direction both hands, then "flush" with dominant LH so lady faces away, resting RH on her shoulder. Prep, turn out, releasing L.
--
From R-L, take the LH with that funny circly motion.
From R-L-L-R, start a XB with direction on 1, then turn away on 2 (bringing LH to shoulder to start lady's turn), and complete CW turn for the man, CCW for the lady, ending with R-L.
On 7, prep to the R with the RH, so that on 1-3 we do a double turn.
I like the draw, catch and inside turn; also the swing with turns at the end, although it's a bit hard to do.
----
XB to open, SR turn with man's side turn.
From L-R resist, step to the L and draw the lady through, LH going over her head to end the walk with a half CCW turn. (Woman's doing something like XB, but the man's the other side.) Catch her with a hand on the ribcage, then XB out again, with inside turn.
----
XB feet, swapping hands to R-L, then turn around in a circle, RH palm up over R shoulder. Lady just has to follow. ;-)
----
On 1, lead out. Start like half crucifix, but don't stop; instead, use the LH on the lady's L shoulder to give her another free turn. On 6, catch her ribcage as it goes past, and on 7 swing, so the man turns 180deg through the woman's path. Catch RH again as it goes through, back into L-R.
One nice circle. From L-L R-R, do XB with outside (CCW) turn as if doing full crucifix, but keep turning and put R arm around lady's shoulder, still holding both hands. man steps backwards, to turn 360deg, coming out on 1 into XB in the same direction as the first.
Private lesson for Vicky's birthday. Takeaways:
* the Son timing is very relaxed, and can be slipped into a normal Salsa track fairly easily. Actually Lisa & Mark tend to slip 1 towards 8 & 5 towards 4 during normal dancing.
* reverse XB, moving (CW around the man) 1-2-3, in place on 5-6-7, then back on *1*-2-3.
* open-close, or open-close with taps -- they're similar from the follower's POV. I still can't easily slip into this, but should practice.
* XB to open L-R, on 5 arm goes R, on 6 open [not too big!] and move the whole frame L, and then on 7 man steps forward and pulls lady through. Finish with a turn for the man.
From R-L-L-R, XB with inside turn, LH high to wrap. Turn CCW (man walks backwards), then lead out.
Nice sequence. First part is a bit random, but actually quite relaxing & slow if it works:
* XB in closed hold. Sideways tap-step alternately on *4*-5-6-7-8-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, then tap on 1, step forward on 2 and into XB.
And the second part is cool. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to describe it though. Hopefully at least it'll get me through to the week after next when lessons restart.
XB and slide to R-L-L-R. 5-6-7 wind round with both arms down-and-out (so LH CW and RH CCW), and turn 1/3 of a turn to the R, bringing LH to the shoulder and RH high. There's the start of a lead on 7.
lead f/w on 1, then finish the R turn on 2-3.
Turns.
Lead out.
Swing
Dancing with Vicky in the living room, she said my lead was quite high. For example, in a XB I was leading at the shoulder, but it would feel more secure lead at the hip.
Cross body stop. start like a normal XB, but on 2, cross R in front, and stop. Don't step 3. On 5, back to normal. Liked this one, it's similar to one I've been doing anyway, but more so.
Resist and swap. 5-*6*-7 resist and lady walks under, 1-*2*-3 resist and man turns CCW, repeat. Also very nice and simple. With a bit of practice, man can compensate for ladies who don't move fast enough.
on1 improvers lesson at Red Hat Salsa
http://www.redhatsalsa.com/salsa.reading.html . Went to improvers, which was fairly easy. Should be able to do intermediates (but it's earlier). The teacher (Sharon) reckoned I could do what I thought was upper intermediates (although looking at the timetable it was probably the advanced class), but I think some experience of the moves would help first.
<<<
in closed hold: SR turn w/ man's half side turn.
Drop hand and catch behind with R, resist lady to R side of man, taking other hand.
Lead lady across to L side.
Lead f/w and down as prep for SR turn with R high, L low, wrapping around back.
Drop R hand over lady's head, and lead XB w/ inside turn.
<<<
SR turn from closed, man does half side turn, keeping L-R and placing man hand on his R shoulder.
1 - step forward, so hand drops off shoulder. Catch it in R hand, outstretched backwards.
2-3 resist, and spring lady forwards next to man, on R side. Put out L hand and take her L and under the existing hold.
lead across, just like XB but sideways -- ie, 5, 6 walk, 7 turn.
1-2-3 lead f/w and down with both hands (but don't lean forwards!), then bring R hand up.
5-6-7 SR turn keeping L hand, wrapping lady behind.
1-2-3 start XB. Drop R hand over lady's head, then disengage and move R hand to her near shoulder ready to lead XB.
5-6-7 XB, L hand stays low.
finish by draping L hand over man's head, in practice probably with XB.
> XB to R-L-L-R. SR turn to cross hands. Resist, and copa, back to R-L-L-R.
XB and slide to open, R-L-L-R. SR turn, both hands high. 5-*6*-7 resist, and step to the L. LH down on 1 -- copa, "like hitting it on a table"?! -- and then forward on 2. RH stays high, and on 3 turns lady CW. Slip L hand and retake to open R-L-L-R.
> Resist, step round behind as lady steps forward. Release R and step in front, L high and held behind. Turn out 1.5, then into closed and walk around 1.5 turns. XB.
From R-L-L-R. Lead is with RH low (LH lead makes it all go horribly wrong!). Resist, step to the L to let lady pass, and round behind her, RH coming to waist and LH resting on her L shoulder. Lady is now standing to R of man, his R arm round her back, his L arm high (ish -- where exactly?)
We've done all that bit before. Now slip RH, and step in front of her and to her R, holding LH high, so follower is behind and to L of man. Lead forward on 1 (?), then CW turn-and-a-half.
Coming out of the turns (would probably work with any XB with inside turn L-R), catch lady in closed hold, and go straight into walking around in a circle 1 1/2 times. Come out into XB as normal.
This was a good one. I can't remember it all, but ...
start R-R. 1-2-3 resist, then gather lady into R armpit (!) with arm around her shoulder and both step back and f/w.
Turn out 1.5 for lady.
As the lady comes out, sweep R arm down, and man does 11-o'clock _half_-turn. I don't think this bit turns the lady? Coming out of the half-turn, 'bounce' the hand, it feels like you change direction and give the lady a R turn.
Improvers on2.
<<<
Two similar moves, starting with XB inside turn R-R, then the man does a half turn, and leads the lady to turn R. First time we keep the hold and come back to R-R, second time we release the hold and the man turns (more), returning to closed hold.
<<<
XB and slide to L-R. change hands and SR turn.
XB with inside turn
5-6-7 Two o'clock half turn, so man faces away from woman. Bring R hand to R shoulder, palm up, woman's hand over shoulder.
1-2-3 lead woman SR turn. Man turns back (ie L half-turn).
5-6-7 lead woman another SR turn -- this is not the normal time. (Does it need to start a beat earlier or something? Don't recall). Man does XB-style feet, stepping //in front// of lady on 6, not behind.
1-2-3 XB with inside turn (again, I think).
5-6-7 2 o'clock half turn, facing away again, hand over shoulder
1-2-3 push and release hand over shoulder, lady does SR turn. Man does half left turn again??? I thought it was something more dynamic than this. I also thought it led straight into XB without needing to prep it, but maybe not.
finish XB to closed.

SR Turn: 5-6-7 prep, 1-2-3 turn
XB: 5-6-7 step to R, 1-2-3 lady crosses
Nice things to do with beginners
* turns, inside and outside, in the tube and not
* SR turn with man's side turn L-R; resist and draw, stepping L. Catch woman's ribcage again, and go into XB. 2008 01 21
* what was that one where the man turns and then turns back?
* From R-R. (XB inside turn, then) man 2-oclock half-turn, look over shoulder, turn back and lady two SR turns (5 March 2007). Variation: lady free SR turn, man turns all the way around.
* full crucifix variations: R arm round shoulder; turn all the way, then turn back; turn a bit further, resting R arm around shoulder; rather than turning out in-place, do another XB with R turn (18 June 2007 - Improvers).
** half crucifix variations: from R-R, hand on shoulder; from R-R, take L-L low and half crucifix with LH on hip (18 June 2007 - Improvers); double turn out (need to have done half turn by 1) (2007 09 26)
* sequence of resists. Start L-L R-R with SR turn, both hands high. XXX find the other variations in old notes. (Could come out from R-L with man's turn L high, see 14 May 2007 - improvers)
* from a single-hand hold, use XB to hold up the other hand, palm out. Probably with an inside turn.
* R high, L low: man's L turn over two bars, turn back R over 1 bar and give the lady a R turn.
* R-L-L-R half outside turn, then throw hand down w/ L and man's turn
* from XB, pull to R with L-R, then pull to L with R-L, turning back-to-back. Stay close. (20 March 2007 - improvers)
* from XB (with, I think, inside turn with L-R hold), go straight into walking round in a circle 1.5 times and another XB (see 21 May 2007 - improvers)
* XB and slide R-L-L-R, then copa and R-cuddle 21 May 2007 - improvers
Also add from 30 April 2007 - improvers, then 21 May 2007 - improvers

* I can't remember how this one works, but there's a good one from R-L-L-R where both arms (all four?) are raised, and the woman is guided around the back of the man and back in front again. The man travels too of course.
